Workers union Unite announced potential strikes at a refueling company at London Heathrow Airport (LHR), raising concerns about travel disruptions during the proposed 72-hour strike in May.

The strikes, scheduled from May 4, could affect flight schedules due to fuel supply disruptions. Unite reported that 50 refuelers at AFS planned industrial action following the company’s imposition of significant cuts to new employee terms and conditions since January 2024.

AFS, a joint venture between oil and gas companies, faces accusations of undermining employee benefits. Unite highlighted the impact on refueling operations for carriers like Virgin Atlantic, Delta Air Lines, and others, with 35 airlines relying on AFS at LHR.

Unite condemned AFS’s actions, denouncing the creation of a two-tier workforce as a potential “race to the bottom.” Sharon Graham, General Secretary of Unite, criticized AFS for targeting newly employed staff, emphasizing the union’s support for its members.

The proposed strike coincides with a bank holiday weekend in the UK, potentially disrupting the travel plans of millions. Cirium data showed a significant number of outbound flights from LHR during the holiday period, raising concerns about potential disruptions.
