When people think about electric cars, they often worry about how they sound. Some say the hum of an electric motor is boring, while others don’t like the artificial engine noises that some electric cars make through speakers. Maserati wants to change that perception by creating a new sound experience for its electric models.

Maserati recently revealed its latest electric car, the GranCabrio Folgore. This electric supercar can reach speeds of up to 180 mph with its triple motor setup. But what sets it apart is the sound it makes, which Maserati describes as creating a strong connection between the driver and the car.

According to Davide Danesin, head of Maserati engineering, the sound experience is crucial for driving a Maserati. To develop this sound, Maserati’s engineers studied the electricity flowing through the car’s inverter. This helped them understand how the car was performing, whether it was accelerating, braking, or idling at a stoplight.

The sound created by the car isn’t just a loud electric motor noise. Danesin explains that electric sounds can be harsh because of their high frequencies. Instead, Maserati drew inspiration from its iconic V8 engines, known for their distinctive roar. They used characteristics from the V8 engine to define a unique sound signature for Maserati’s electric cars.

This signature sound is applied to all of Maserati’s electric models, including the GranCabrio Folgore, GranTurismo Folgore, and Grecale Folgore. The sound is played through up to 21 speakers provided by Italian audio brand Sonus Faber, ensuring that both passengers inside the car and people on the street can hear the unique sound of Maserati’s electric vehicles.
