The best-selling Jeep in the domestic market might surprise some: it’s the Grand Cherokee. In the United States alone, over 244,000 units were sold in the previous year, with first-quarter 2024 volumes exceeding 54,000 units. These figures outpace both the Wrangler and the Wagoneer.

The Grand Cherokee underwent a ground-up redesign for the 2021 model year, showcasing significant changes. Notably, for the 2023 model year, Jeep discontinued the 5.7-liter HEMI V8 from the two-row version, with plans to do the same for the larger Grand Cherokee L in 2025. Additionally, the venerable 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 is expected to be phased out from both models.

This shift signals a transition towards smaller, more efficient engines, offering customers a choice between a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder and a plug-in hybrid variant of the Pentastar V6.

While currently, only the Grand Cherokee is available with the plug-in hybrid option, the Grand Cherokee L provides a selection of V6 or V8 powertrains.

Although some may lament the departure of the Pentastar V6 and HEMI V8, the new turbocharged engines offer comparable performance with increased torque figures. For instance, the 2.0-liter turbocharged 4xe plug-in hybrid variant surpasses the HEMI in torque output.

Looking ahead, the industry-wide push for improved fuel economy and reduced emissions necessitates such transitions. While enthusiasts may yearn for the return of a potent inline-six engine, platform constraints, and regulatory pressures dictate otherwise.
