The Toyota Crown, though not the flagship model of Toyota, has always been synonymous with adding a touch of luxury to the mid-size category. Since its inception in 1955, the Crown has been a premium offering in Toyota’s lineup.

In North America, it enjoyed popularity until 1972, when it was replaced by the Corona Mark II. However, its allure persisted in other markets. In 2022, Toyota reintroduced the Crown to American enthusiasts as part of the sixteenth generation, reimagining it akin to a Hollywood franchise reboot.

The latest generation of the Crown boasts a diverse range of body styles, with some variants exclusive to specific regions. For instance, the North American market received the S235, a crossover-style variant resembling a four-door fastback sedan with subtle SUV features.

Meanwhile, Japan offers the Crown Sport, a five-door crossover, alongside the classic four-door sedan. Despite this variety, Toyota experienced a surge in Crown sales in the US during the first quarter of the year, indicating strong consumer interest.

Given its unique position in the US market, it’s no surprise that Toyota prioritized updating the regular Crown for the 2025 model year. Amidst the launches of various models like the Tacoma and Camry, the Crown holds its ground as an alternative to the dwindling selection of mid-size and large passenger cars.

While competitors like the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class offer traditional sedans or wagons, Toyota’s Crown stands out for its distinctive design. With its recent update for the 2025 model year, including new technology and styling enhancements, the Crown continues to offer a compelling choice for those seeking a non-crossover option.
