Carparazzo DrGumoLunatic recently captured footage of a camouflaged G90 while it was charging. The 700-plus-horsepower sedan is easily distinguishable from lower versions of the 5 Series, with its wider arches, aggressive rear bumper, and M5-specific front end with active flaps/shutters. However, the all-season tires on the four-door prototype are out of place.

Other G90s and G99s were seen with summer-only performance tires, measuring 285/40 by 20 inches in the front and 295/35 by 21 inches in the rear. The previous F90 M5 CS, by comparison, used 275/35R20 and 285/35R20 tires.

As a plug-in hybrid, the G90 and five-door G99 will offer some all-electric range. The EPA rated the XM at 31 miles, while the 4.4L twin-turbo V8 alone gets 14 miles per gallon. With a full charge of the 29.5-/25.7-kWh battery and 18.2 gallons of fuel, the BMW XM has a total range of 300 miles.

The XM’s range is poor, but it’s only the second car developed entirely by the M division after the M1 from the late 1970s. Unlike the M1, which had a unique platform, the XM is a shortened X7 with more power than the ICE-only Audi RS Q8. The M1’s engine was modified for several vehicles, including the E24 M635CSi, E28 M5, and E23 745i.

The M5 Touring will be heavier, which may affect its dynamics, but active roll bars, rear torque vectoring, and rear-wheel steering should aid in handling. And yes, the M5 Touring will be available in the US.
