Rumors are swirling about the C8 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1, which is expected to unleash over 800 horsepower this summer from its rear mid-engine. Priced around $130k MSRP, it’s likely to reach $200k with dealer markups, venturing into supercar territory. The ZR1, synonymous with peak GM performance, stands out as the fastest, most powerful, and most exclusive Corvette.

Out of eight Corvette generations, only four have donned the ZR1 badge. Initially, the ZR1 was a special lightweight handling package for the 1970-1972 Corvette C3 with the iconic LT-1 small-block V8. Few were made, and fewer survive today.

If you’re looking to collect ZR1 Corvettes before the fifth iteration launches, start with the C3. Mecum Auctions in Indianapolis on May 18 offer two examples: a 1970 ZR1 Convertible and a 1972 ZR1 Coupe, both Bloomington Gold Certified and extremely rare.

The C4 ZR1 (1990-1995) re-established America’s presence in the sports car world, featuring the DOHC 32-valve LT5 engine with 375-405 hp. Illinois Motors has a rare Quasar Blue Metallic example for $89,800.

In 2009, the C6 ZR1, nicknamed ‘Blue Devil,’ boasted 638 hp from a supercharged 6.2-liter LS9 engine. A 2009 ZR1 with low miles is available on Bring a Trailer.

The C7 ZR1 (2019) ended the front-engine era with a 755 hp, 6.2-liter LT5 V8. BaT lists a 965-mile 2019 ZR1 Convertible in Sebring Orange Tintcoat. Looking ahead, the C8 ZR1 will continue this legacy with its mid-engine setup.
