Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump recently met with top U.S. oil executives and made promises to change many of the environmental rules and policies set by President Joe Biden’s administration. According to the Washington Post, Trump asked the executives to contribute $1 billion to his presidential campaign during the meeting, which took place last month in Florida.
During the meeting, Trump said he would reverse Biden’s emissions rules that support electric vehicles and lift the freeze on permits for new liquefied natural gas exports. He described giving $1 billion as a favorable deal for the executives. Among those present were CEOs from Venture Global, Cheniere Energy, and representatives from Chevron, Continental Resources, Exxon, and Occidental Petroleum.
When asked for comment, Trump’s campaign representatives did not respond. Exxon representatives stated they had no more information to share, while the other companies did not respond to requests for comment.
Trump, who is running for president against Biden in the upcoming election, has pledged to undo many of Biden’s actions on climate change. Biden, on the other hand, has highlighted his administration’s efforts to combat climate change as beneficial for both the environment and the economy, which is an important aspect of his re-election campaign.
During the meeting, Trump also mentioned plans to sell more leases for oil drilling in the Gulf of Mexico and reverse restrictions on drilling in the Alaskan Arctic. He reiterated his criticisms of wind power.
