The all-new Chevy Trax is larger and more spacious than before, and it offers even better value.
Its brilliant facelift and improved safety features make a once-dreary subcompact more appealing. An automatic six-speed transmission and 137 horsepower, three-cylinder turbocharged engine power every Trax, which is front-wheel drive.
It uses the smaller Trailblazer’s drivetrain and takes design cues from the mid-size Blazer.
The beginning price of the new Trax is unusually lower than the one it replaces, and it offers greater rear legroom and storage space than the previous generation.
The Trax is a smart choice for people trying to get the most value out of their new car purchase. It is one of the most reasonably priced crossovers on the market today, after the tiny Kia Soul and Hyundai Venue.
The Chevy Trax is back after a brief absence as a thicker crossover with more standard features. The Trax is all-new on the interior and out, and it boasts a longer wheelbase, more back legroom, and more load space.
Instead of just two trim options, the Trax now comes in five. This time around, Chevy employs the Trailblazer’s 137-hp turbocharged three-cylinder engine, providing the Trax 18 fewer horsepower than the previous model—a big decrease when you only have 155 horsepower to begin with.
Exterior
The Chevrolet Safety Assist suite of driver-aid features is included on every Trax.
Visit the websites of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) for more details regarding the Trax’s crash test results. Important safety elements include:
Pedestrian identification in automatic emergency braking standards
Lane-keeping assistance and the common lane-departure warning
adaptive cruise control is accessible
Interior
The interior of the 2017 Chevy Trax has undergone a thorough redesign. The climate controls and infotainment screen that faces the driver are conveniently located, and the remainder of the inside is constructed of materials that are typical for cars in this price range.
The new Trax features a longer wheelbase than the previous model, which adds nearly three inches to the rear legroom and increases the load capacity.
This time, it seems lower and more carlike when driving, which we think is a significant plus. Although trim-dependent, technological extras like remote start, heated front seats and steering wheels, and a sunroof assist provide life to an otherwise dull interior.
Chevy provides an 8.0-inch infotainment display as standard equipment for the Trax LS and 1RS trims, which is already a larger unit than what was previously available on the most expensive model of the previous generation.
On models LT and higher, an 11.0-inch infotainment touchscreen with an 8.0-inch gauge cluster is standard. Many of the new Trax technologies, like wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a wireless phone charger, and a WiFi hotspot, are managed from the driver command center.
Performance
Every Chevrolet Trax is equipped with a 1.2-liter, three-cylinder turbocharged engine that produces 137 horsepower and a six-speed automated transmission. Under the hood of the Chevy Trailblazer is the same powertrain. This is the sole available engine, and it only supports front-wheel drive.
Although the Trax is slightly bigger than the Trailblazer, the most recent Trailblazer we tested was all-wheel drive and could reach 60 mph in 9.4 seconds, which required patience.
The Trax has adequate power to accelerate with considerable vigor but is somewhat constrained by its ponderous transmission because torque comes on low in the rev range.
Despite its flaws, we still prefer the slower shifts of the Trax to the unexceptional CVTs found in rival crossovers. In any event, we anticipate the Trax’s performance to be most laid-back.
The EPA expected the 2024 Chevy Trax to get 28 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the interstate. These results are comparable to those of the non-turbo Mazda CX-30, despite the fact that the CX-30 has all-wheel drive and the Trax only has front-wheel drive.
The Trax also offers greater city fuel efficiency than the Hyundai Kona. We’ll update this section once we’ve tested the Trax’s real-world efficiency on our 75 mph highway fuel economy route. Visit the EPA website to learn more about the Trax’s fuel efficiency.
