Securing the privilege to acquire a Bugatti places one firmly in a tax bracket that transcends the financial realms of ordinary individuals. However, Bugatti’s Sur Mesure division extends an extravagant invitation to customers willing to delve into incomprehensible expenditures. One such patron recently harnessed the creative prowess of the Sur Mesure division, birthing a distinctive Bugatti Super Sport named the ’57 One of One.’
Inspired by the legendary Bugatti Type 57 SC Atlantic, and more specifically, the historic No. 57374 initially owned by Victor Rothschild and later celebrated with the “Best of Show” accolade at the 2003 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, this special Super Sport stands as a testament to automotive opulence. The origin of this bespoke creation traces back to the customer’s encounter with a Type 57 SC Atlantic two decades ago at Peter Mullin’s automotive museum.
Recounting the pivotal moment, the customer, now commemorating her 70th birthday with a Chiron Super Sport courtesy of her husband, decided to pay homage to the Type 57 SC. Jascha Straub, the lead designer at Sur Mesure, meticulously ensured the correctness of the color palette by personally visiting the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, where the original Atlantic was exhibited.
Collaborating with engineers, the Sur Mesure team successfully recreated the vertical slats in the grille, presenting a new grille adorned with polished vertical lines and a more robust central spine, paying homage to the Type 57.
Every detail of the ‘One of One’ echoes the spirit of the Type 57. From the polished chrome five-spoke Super Sport wheels matching the original blue to the hand-drawn silhouette of the Atlantic beneath the rear wing, featuring ’57’ and ‘One of One’ lettering. Internally, the Atlantic’s silhouette is delicately hand-stitched in ‘Lightning Blue’ on the door panels and a center console, proudly announcing ’57 One of One.’ Even the iconic dancing elephant sculpture by Rembrandt Bugatti finds its place, intricately embroidered on the headrests.
Under the hood, the ‘One of One’ boasts the formidable 8.0-liter 16-cylinder engine, generating a staggering 1578 horsepower, a trait shared with its Chiron Super Sport counterparts. Bugatti’s claim of a 0-60 mph sprint in just 2.3 seconds and a top speed exceeding 260 mph underscores the breathtaking performance inherent in this automotive masterpiece.
In a test, the Super Sport accelerated to 60 mph in a mere 2.2 seconds and achieved 200 mph in less than 15 seconds, further attesting to the extraordinary capabilities of even the non-customized Super Sports. In essence, each Bugatti, especially the ‘One of One,’ transcends the boundaries of conventional automotive experiences, offering an unparalleled journey into the realm of automotive extravagance.
