Before Audi introduced the RS2 Avant and BMW unveiled its inaugural M5 Touring, AMG’s North American division was already in the works with its own high-performance Mercedes wagons.

This particular model, affectionately dubbed “The Mallet,” is a unique developmental prototype from 1988 that is currently up for auction. The narrative of this Mercedes-Benz 300 TE 6.0 AMG begins with Richard Buxbaum, the founder of AMG of North America.

Tasked with building a V8 wagon in 1987, and with the car commissioned by a particularly affluent customer, it boasted a 6.0-liter engine outfitted with newly engineered 32-valve cylinder heads, delivering a potent 375 hp (280 kW/380 PS).

Upon its debut, the car caused quite a stir in the automotive press, earning the moniker “The Hammer.” However, with the cylinder heads alone adding $65,000 to the car’s price tag, Buxbaum concluded that few others were likely to purchase one.

Nonetheless, he believed he could potentially find enough interest to justify a limited production run if a 16-valve version was put into production. Thus, he acquired a Mercedes 300 TE and utilized it as a prototype.

In addition to the 310 hp (231 kW/314 PS) V8 engine, it underwent various enhancements including rolled fenders, a set of 16-inch AMG monoblock wheels (later replaced with 17-inch wheels), a stainless steel exhaust, bespoke interior modifications, and more.

Furthermore, it was equipped with the limited-slip differential from an S-Class sedan, and its springs were shortened. Custom anti-roll bars were also installed, all meticulously executed to ensure the proper functionality of the self-leveling suspension.

The alterations received acclaim from automotive enthusiasts, including Car and Driver’s John Philips, who christened it “The Mallet.” Despite the slightly less powerful engine, it was reputed to outperform contemporary sports cars such as the Porsche 911 Carrera, Chevrolet Corvette, BMW M5, Lamborghini Jalpa, and even a Ferrari 412.

Regrettably, the project never gained traction, leaving this model as the sole exemplar of its kind, created shortly before AMG was integrated in-house by Mercedes.

As a significant artifact in the history of AMG of North America and a unique vehicle, it is anticipated to fetch a substantial sum at auction.
