Plymouth introduced the original Road Runner during a time when gas was affordable, and Americans were simply eager to accelerate in a straight line. It embodied a timeless blend of muscle and mischief, earning its place as one of the nation’s most rugged, no-frills muscle cars.

There’s a distinctive sense of humor surrounding the Road Runner, not just because of the cartoon character. It’s as if these vehicles didn’t take themselves too seriously but in the most enjoyable manner possible. It’s akin to Deadpool from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. If Ryan Reynolds doesn’t already possess a first-gen Road Runner, he should consider acquiring one.

Beneath the straightforward exterior lies a formidable powertrain. Upon its debut in 1968 (as a 1969 model), the base engine was a 383 cubic inch V8. While true enthusiasts may have preferred the legendary 426 cubic inch Hemi V8, the 440 cubic inch V8 was also an impressive option.

Regardless, all these engines packed a punch, even the base 383 cubic inch, showcasing the essence of this car. Despite leveraging the popularity of the beloved Warner Bros. cartoon character and boasting impressive specs, the Road Runner wasn’t without its flaws.

With a suspension system tailored for straight-line speed rather than cornering, handling took a back seat. Additionally, while the minimalist interior added to its charm, it left something to be desired in terms of comfort and convenience.

Nevertheless, it’s easy to overlook such shortcomings when dealing with a vehicle focused on raw performance. As the 1960s transitioned into the 1970s, and with the onset of new regulations, people began to appreciate the first-gen Road Runner even more.

With that appreciation in mind, let’s take a moment to admire this numbers-matching 1969 Road Runner in black-on-black. It comes complete with two broadcast sheets, a build sheet, an original window sticker, as well as the original bill of sale, brochure, and owner’s manual.

This beauty can be yours for $89,900, and considering the specifications, it might just be worth every penny.

Notable features include Performance hood paint, red stripe, black vinyl split bench seats, rear armrest, deluxe steering wheel, AM radio, Road Runner floor mats and horn, a 4-speed manual gearbox, HD rear springs, and torsion bars, sway bar, HD brakes, HD shocks, and chrome exhaust outlets.

Under the hood lies a numbers-matching 383 cubic inch V8 engine, the entry-level powerhouse. However, there’s no reason to feel disappointed because the 383 V8 still delivers an impressive 335 horsepower and 425 lb-ft of torque. This beast should pull like a locomotive, reaching 60 mph in the late 5-second range.
