Volvo Revamps Lineup: New Names, Performance Boosts, and Dark Editions!

Volvo is addressing the complexity of its expanding lineup by simplifying its naming conventions for fully electric and plug-in hybrid models. The “Recharge” designation will no longer be used for these models. Instead, the XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge will now be known as the EX40 and EC40, respectively.

These models will join Volvo’s other EVs, such as the smaller EX30 crossover, the full-size EX90 SUV, and the EM90 minivan, available exclusively in China. Additionally, plug-in hybrid models like the XC60 Recharge and S60 Recharge will adopt the “T6” or “T8” suffix based on their combined power output, repurposing a designation previously used for gasoline models as Volvo moves towards a fully electric lineup by 2030.

In terms of performance enhancements, Volvo is offering a Performance Software Pack as an option for the dual-motor versions of the EX40 and EC40 in select markets.

This upgrade increases the total power output to 436 hp, providing faster acceleration, although specific figures have not been disclosed yet. Existing owners of the 2024MY XC40 Recharge or C40 can also opt for this upgrade.

Furthermore, Volvo is not neglecting its internal combustion engine cars. The XC60 and XC90 now feature a more efficient B5 mild-hybrid engine, resulting in a reduction of fuel consumption by approximately four percent for the XC60 and two percent for the XC90.

Additionally, Volvo is expanding its “Black Edition” lineup, following the success of the XC60 Black Edition launched last year, by introducing similar dark-themed variants for the XC40, EX40, and C40 models. These editions feature glossy black 20-inch wheels, Onyx Black paint, high-gloss badging, and dark interiors.

Volvo remains committed to its electrification strategy, with plans to introduce several more EVs in the coming years.

Despite zero-emission vehicles accounting for only 16 percent of total sales in 2023, Volvo achieved a record-breaking total shipment of 708,716 cars last year, with EVs comprising 113,419 units, marking a significant increase of 70 percent compared to 2022.
