Logano, who pilots the No. 22 Ford for Team Penske, faced a $10,000 fine for donning racing gloves lacking SFI certification. NASCAR opted not to impose any points penalty on the driver or his team.
During a pre-race inspection at Atlanta Motor Speedway last Sunday, Logano’s gloves were found to have been tampered with, potentially to gain a competitive edge.
Black webbing had been added between the thumb and index finger of his left glove. Logano was observed pressing his left hand against the window netting during his qualifying lap on Saturday.
As a consequence, despite qualifying second, Logano was forced to commence Sunday’s race from the rear of the field and serve a drive-through penalty on pit road upon receiving the green flag.
Video footage of Logano’s qualifying lap at Atlanta, along with discussions regarding the use of his gloves, is available in the Fox Sports clip below.
On another front within the Cup series, two Stewart-Haas Racing teams – specifically the No. 10 of Noah Gragson and the No. 41 of Ryan Preece – incurred penalties due to unapproved roof air deflectors on their respective vehicles. NASCAR inspectors confiscated these deflectors during the opening-day inspection on Friday.
Both teams and their drivers were docked 35 points each. Consequently, Gragson finds himself with -6 points after the season’s initial two races, while Preece stands at zero points.
A spokesperson for SHR stated that the organization had no comment and was yet to decide whether to lodge an appeal.
In the Xfinity Series, Jason Miller, crew chief for driver J.J. Yeley in the previous Saturday’s race, received a two-race suspension (spanning through Phoenix) for his involvement in a physical altercation with driver Kyle Weatherman.
The incident occurred following contact between Weatherman and Yeley during the race, resulting in Yeley spinning out. A video uploaded to YouTube depicts Miller confronting Weatherman and subsequently grabbing him by the throat as Weatherman stood by his car post-event.
Crew chief Seth Chavka was fined $5,000 for an improperly attached lug nut on Joe Gibbs Racing’s No. 19 Toyota after the race.
