Porsche 911 Safety Recall: 2023 Models Affected by Seatbelt Issue

Porsche has issued a safety recall affecting 910 units of the 2023 model year 911 in the United States. These vehicles are equipped with seatbelt automatic locking retractors that may deactivate prematurely, potentially compromising the proper securing of the child restraint system.

The affected 911s, not meeting the requirements outlined by Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 208 for occupant crash protection, are identified by part numbers 992.857.805A, 992.857.805C, and 992.857.806C within the automaker’s parts system.

Supplied by Joyson Safety Systems Aschaffenburg GmbH, the rear seat three-point seatbelt assemblies were flagged for this condition in January 2024. Porsche promptly responded and instructed dealers to inspect the automatic seatbelt retractor locking mechanisms for both left and right side rear belts on March 6, 2024. If found defective, dealers are required to replace both assemblies.

Owners can anticipate receiving notification letters via Porsche-branded envelopes through first-class mail by April 19, 2024. Joyson Safety Systems addressed the issue by optimizing the assembly jig on August 4, 2023. Additionally, they improved the automated camera-based check at the assembly line on August 16, 2023.

The 992.2 mid-cycle refresh is imminent for the eighth-generation 911. Spy shots have been circulating, hinting at the introduction of the first-ever hybrid 911, rumored to be named T-HEV.

Expected in 2026, this self-charging hybrid system would integrate an integrated starter generator and an electric drive unit positioned beneath the fuel tank, enhancing front-wheel propulsion and improving weight distribution.

Also anticipated is the launch of a 3.6-liter engine to replace the current GT3 and Turbo engines. Presently, the 992 series features a naturally aspirated 4.0-liter engine in GT3 models and a turbocharged 3.7-liter engine in Turbo models.

Collaborating with Croatian manufacturer Rimac, Porsche developed the T-HEV module, coinciding with their partnership with Bugatti since November 2021, with Porsche holding a 45 percent stake in the joint venture.
