2024 Volkswagen ID.4: Enhanced Features and Performance Upgrades

The Volkswagen ID.4 constituted 11.5 percent of the total deliveries by the German automaker in the United States last year. To maintain sales momentum, several enhancements have been made to the compact-sized crossover for 2024, with a focus on prioritizing the 82-kWh battery over the standard 62-kilowatt-hour pack.

Among the updates, ID.4 models equipped with the larger battery now feature backlit sliders for the 12.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Additionally, Volkswagen has enhanced the rear drive unit, known internally as the APP 550 electric motor, making it the highest-torque unit yet in a Volkswagen electric vehicle.

This motor delivers 282 horsepower and 402 pound-feet (545 Nm) of torque, a significant improvement over the previous model’s 201 horsepower and 229 pound-feet (310 Nm) of torque.

The APP 550 connects to the rear wheels via a diff and a single-speed gearbox, contributing to improved performance. All-wheel-drive ID.4s can reach up to 335 horsepower, with a maximum speed electronically limited to 112 mph (180 kph).

Other updates for the 2024 model year include a revised infotainment menu, a more user-friendly climate control interface, and changes to the shifter and steering wheel layout. Notably, the ID.4 S grade now comes standard with a heated steering wheel.

The rear drive unit now employs a three-phase permanent magnet synchronous motor with an in-house-developed inverter and software. All-wheel-drive models feature an asynchronous electric motor up front.

Pricing starts at $39,735 for the 62-kWh battery variant and $44,875 for the 82-kWh version, excluding destination charges. Vehicles equipped with SK On modules and cells qualify for a $7,500 federal tax credit.

Volkswagen offers warranties covering the high-voltage system, bumper-to-bumper coverage, and a Carefree Maintenance Program for scheduled maintenance services.

At the end of the press release, Volkswagen identified the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6 as direct competitors, both based on the E-GMP vehicle architecture, offering higher voltage compared to the Volkswagen MEB platform.
