However, stringent fuel emission and consumption regulations led Chrysler to phase out its high-performance engines by 1971, curtailing the Challenger’s heyday to just two years. Despite production extending until 1974, the elimination of big-block V8 options by 1972 dampened its performance prowess.
Nevertheless, the Challenger cemented its status as an icon of the golden age of muscle cars, particularly through the high-performance R/T variants of 1970 and 1971, featuring the potent 440-cubic-inch (7.2-liter) RB and 426-cubic-inch (7.0-liter) HEMI V8 engines.
