Ford Performance has offered a glimpse of an upcoming high-performance variant of the F-150 Lightning. However, before enthusiasts reach for their checkbooks, it’s worth noting that this model will serve as Ford’s entry into the 102nd edition of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.
The teaser image provides a glimpse of a sleek, wide-bodied vehicle, featuring what appears to be a substantial rear wing, hinting at the potential of this Supertruck that Formula 1 driver Daniel Ricciardo hinted at last year.
While details remain scarce, Ford has revealed that this vehicle will compete under the number 150. Notably, last year, Ford made headlines with the electric SuperVan 4.2, setting a remarkable time of 8:47.682 with driver Romain Dumas behind the wheel, securing the fastest run in the Open Class. Naturally, Ford will aim to surpass its 2023 performance with this latest endeavor.
Building upon the legacy of the SuperVan, the standard F-150 Lightning’s robust output of 580 horsepower and 775 lb-ft of torque might fall short in the rigorous Pikes Peak environment.
Given the truck’s substantial weight of nearly 6,893 lbs in Platinum trim and its comfort-focused handling, significant modifications will be necessary for optimal performance.
Speculations abound regarding the drivetrain, with possibilities ranging from borrowing the powertrain of the high-performance Mustang Mach-E 1400, boasting 1,400 horsepower from seven electric motors, to leveraging components from the SuperVan. This venture will yield a bespoke creation distinct from the production F-150 Lightning.
To equip the F-150 Lightning for the Pikes Peak challenge, Ford Performance is likely to outfit it with specialized aerodynamics, akin to the enhancements implemented on the SuperVan 4.2, including a carbon fiber rear spoiler and front splitter for enhanced stability.
Given the unforgiving nature of the Pikes Peak course, optimizing aerodynamics is crucial for success. Anticipation builds as Ford prepares to unveil this electrifying creation, expected around June.
