Hyundai N’s technical advisor has affirmed the division’s commitment to developing more affordable electric performance vehicles.
Albert Biermann, during the Australian debut of the Ioniq 5 N, expressed Hyundai N’s interest in creating accessible N cars: “Of course, we would like to do that.”
Biermann emphasized the ongoing efforts within Hyundai N to explore options for crafting engaging electric models at a more accessible price point. He stressed the importance of introducing a smaller, more affordable electric N car, highlighting it as a top priority.
While Hyundai’s ICE-powered Elantra N offers an enticing starting price, the anticipated cost of the Ioniq 5 N is likely to exceed $60,000, posing a challenge for many enthusiasts. However, the scope of Hyundai N’s endeavors is contingent upon the broader strategy of the parent company.
Hyundai N typically builds its vehicles based on existing models and platforms. Without suitable electric vehicle options from Hyundai, the N division’s ability to develop affordable electric models is constrained.
Despite the discontinuation of compact ICE-powered models like the i20 N and i30 N in Europe, Biermann hinted at the potential unveiling of a concept for a small-performance EV.
Biermann emphasized the significance of introducing a compact, affordable N car that offers exhilarating driving dynamics. He underscored the division’s dedication to delivering the essence of an N car within a more accessible segment, potentially surpassing the driving enjoyment of existing models.
While Hyundai has expressed interest in affordable electric vehicles, it remains uncertain if proposed models like the Casper EV would receive the N treatment.
Future Hyundai electric vehicles will leverage the Integrated Modular Architecture (IMA), offering standardized batteries and motors across various models. This platform, slated to debut in 2025, holds promise for enabling cost-effective performance electric vehicles.
Moreover, Hyundai has hinted at the possibility of introducing a next-generation Kona N as a battery-electric vehicle, provided it meets affordability criteria. If executed successfully, this initiative could mark the dawn of a new era, offering consumers access to compelling and affordable performance electric vehicles.
