Spirit Airlines Adds Puerto Rico Routes Amid Summer Expansion

Spirit Airlines is expanding its summer routes and adding two new services to Puerto Rico, reinforcing its longstanding presence in the US territory. The airline, known for its ultra-low-cost model, has been serving Puerto Rico for over twenty years, offering multiple flights to the Caribbean island.

New Routes to Puerto Rico

Spirit Airlines is enhancing options for US travelers heading to Puerto Rico this summer by introducing two new routes. Among seven new routes launching in May, two are directed to Puerto Rico.

The budget carrier plans to commence flights from Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) in Texas to Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) in San Juan on May 8, followed by services from Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY) in Louisiana to SJU on May 9.

In addition to these, Spirit will inaugurate four flights from Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) and introduce a daily nonstop service from Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) to New York’s LaGuardia Airport (LGA) from May 8.

Puerto Rico’s Appeal

Puerto Rico remains a popular destination for travelers from the US mainland throughout the year, with major carriers operating frequent flights to the island. Spirit’s expansion aligns with its commitment to serving Puerto Rico, having added five new services last year.

Furthermore, Frontier Airlines’ plans to establish its 13th crew base in San Juan, generating job opportunities and contributing to the local economy, indicate the enduring appeal of Puerto Rico as a key aviation hub.

Recent Developments

Despite expanding its routes, Spirit Airlines has faced challenges, including route cancellations due to delays in Boeing 737 MAX deliveries. Notably, the carrier is discontinuing its year-round operation from Orlando International Airport (MCO) to Manchester Boston Regional Airport (MHT) starting May 7.

Spirit’s fleet expansion continues, with the recent acquisition of its 10th Airbus A321neo aircraft, aligning with its strategy to modernize its fleet and enhance operational efficiency.

The airline’s proposed merger with JetBlue faced setbacks earlier in the year, highlighting the evolving landscape of airline mergers amidst regulatory scrutiny. Both carriers remain focused on navigating challenges and delivering value to passengers.
