When discussing pickup trucks from the 1960s, our minds often gravitate toward the Ford F-Series and the Chevrolet C/K. Undoubtedly, these were the frontrunners of the era, but they weren’t the sole contenders emerging from Detroit. Dodge presented a formidable and dependable option in the form of the D-Series lineup.
Introduced by Chrysler for the 1961 model year, the D-Series succeeded the C-Series and remained in production through three generations until 1993, serving as a crucial link between its predecessor and the more iconic Dodge Ram.
The inaugural generation of the D-Series possessed all the essential elements to rival the F-Series and C/K lineup. It offered straight-sided and step-sided beds in various lengths, catering to the 1/2-, 3/4-, and one-ton markets, along with a choice of inline-six and V8 engines.
Additionally, the D-Series boasted several pioneering features. Firstly, it was the first pickup truck among the Big Three to introduce two rows of seating, with the four-door crew-cab variant debuting in 1962, following International Harvester’s Travelette by a year.
Secondly, it was the sole Big Three truck to offer a diesel engine option, featuring the Perkins 354-cubic-inch (5.8-liter) straight-six introduced in 1962, albeit with limited demand resulting in its brief tenure.
