A recent incident involving a Florida police officer has further tarnished the already strained reputation of law enforcement. Detective Victor Manuel Montalvo, driving an unmarked Miami-Dade Police Department vehicle, collided with another marked police cruiser, as reported by Local 10.
Following the crash, Montalvo brandished his firearm, prompting the other officer involved to draw his weapon before Montalvo eventually surrendered his.
The cause of the collision seemed straightforward, as Montalvo confessed, “I drank too much!” The admission of intoxication while on duty was detailed in the police report.
Despite the incident occurring around 12:40 pm, well before the late hours, Montalvo’s inebriation raises serious concerns about responsible conduct, especially for an officer tasked with public safety.
Although both officers sustained injuries from the crash, fortunately, neither suffered severe harm. Montalvo now faces charges of DUI and DUI with property damage, and he was subsequently released from custody after posting a $2,000 bond this morning.
Expressing disappointment over the situation, Miami-Dade Police Department Director Stephanie V. Daniels stated, “I am disheartened by the recent incident involving one of my officers who was arrested for driving under the influence while on duty.”
She emphasized that Montalvo has been relieved of duty and affirmed the department’s commitment to cooperating with the State Attorney’s office throughout the legal proceedings.
