The three-time champion secured a podium finish in Sunday’s race at Suzuka, marking his return to competition since sustaining severe neck and spine injuries in a SUPER GT crash at Sugo last August.
Despite doubts surrounding his physical condition, Yamamoto showcased a resilient performance, advancing two positions from fifth on the grid to secure a podium finish.
Following a two-month hospitalization and subsequent surgery to regain mobility in his neck, Yamamoto made his first appearance in the Dallara SF23 during February’s pre-season test at Suzuka. While uncertainties persisted about his fitness for the season opener just two weeks later, Yamamoto’s podium finish exceeded expectations.
In a heartfelt parc ferme interview, Yamamoto expressed gratitude for his successful return, humorously remarking, “I’m just glad my neck made it!” Reflecting on his journey, he credited the medical team and his determination for enabling his comeback to competitive racing.
Looking ahead, Yamamoto acknowledged the challenges posed by the unusually cold conditions at Suzuka and anticipated a different scenario at Autopolis in May. Despite the anticipated warmer weather, Yamamoto emphasized the importance of thorough preparation to maintain competitiveness throughout the season.
His podium finish at Suzuka serves as a testament to Yamamoto’s resilience and determination to overcome adversity, setting a positive precedent for the remainder of the Super Formula championship.
