Renowned South African racer Jody Scheckter etched his name in Formula 1 history with a stellar career that spanned from 1972 to 1980, claiming victory in 10 world championship races out of 111 starts. Now, at 74, he’s set to make waves again by offering a glimpse into his illustrious past at RM Sotheby’s Monaco sale on 11 May.

The pièce de résistance of Scheckter’s collection is his ground-effect 1979 Ferrari 312 T4, a machine that played a pivotal role in clinching a driver’s title during the era of the legendary Enzo Ferrari.

Chassis #040, the fourth of its kind, holds a special place in history, having secured consecutive wins at the Belgian and Monaco GPs with Scheckter behind the wheel.

Notably, it led to a Ferrari 1-2 finish at Monza, sealing both drivers’ and constructors’ championships. Acquired from the team in 1982, this flat-12-engined marvel now commands an estimated value of £4.45 to 5 million.

Among the lineup heading to auction is the 1971 McLaren M19A, the very car in which Scheckter made his F1 debut at the United States GP in the subsequent year, clinching a respectable ninth-place finish. This McLaren, also piloted by racing luminaries such as Denny Hulme, Jackie Oliver, and others, boasts a rich racing heritage.

Not stopping there, Scheckter is offering a recreation of the iconic six-wheeled Tyrrell P34, a vehicle that brought him victory at the 1976 Swedish GP, along with four podium finishes. The auction will also feature the 1977 Wolf WR1, designed by Harvey Postlethwaite, which propelled Scheckter to second place in the F1 drivers’ standings.

Beyond the realm of F1, Scheckter’s collection expands to Formula 2 and Formula 3 cars, including a 1972 McLaren M21 and a 1973 Rondel M1. His championship-winning Formula Ford and Formula 5000 cars, alongside a vintage 1960 Alfa Romeo Giulietta SZ sportscar, will grace the auction block.

In total, these 12 meticulously curated lots are estimated to fetch a staggering £10.9 million, offering enthusiasts and collectors a rare opportunity to own a piece of motorsport history meticulously curated by one of its legends, Jody Scheckter.
