Prior to Porsche’s annual press conference today, the German automaker officially announced plans for the 992.2 facelift of the Porsche 911, scheduled for an early summer release, featuring a “high-performance hybrid” variant.
Porsche CEO Oliver Blume emphasized the integration of motorsport-derived technology into series-production models, stating, “Once again, we are deploying technology in series-production models that we have derived from the world of motorsport.”
Porsche’s 2023 Annual and Sustainability Report, highlights the continual advancement of drive technology within each generation of the 911, citing innovations such as turbocharging, all-wheel drive, water cooling, and the PDK dual-clutch transmission.
The report indicates that the next significant advancement will be the introduction of an “ultra-sporty hybrid” for select derivatives of the 911 model line.
Given its motorsport origins, the hybrid system is expected to feature a small, lightweight battery, reflecting a performance-oriented approach rather than prioritizing an extensive all-electric driving range.
Blume had previously hinted at this direction in 2022, referencing the 919 Hybrid program and affirming that the hybridized 911 would occupy the top tier of the range. This announcement strongly suggests that the electrification of the 911 GT2 RS is imminent and implies that other 911 variants will also receive electric assistance.
Despite Porsche’s commitment to electric sports cars, Blume reassures enthusiasts that combustion engine cars and hybrid drives will remain available throughout the transformation period. However, an all-electric 911 is not currently on the horizon.
While Porsche plans multiple product launches in 2024, including the Macan EV, refreshed Taycan, new Taycan Turbo GT, and the latest Panamera, the facelifted 911 stands as one of the eagerly anticipated releases for the year.
This suggests that the electric transition for the 718 range may occur in the following year, indicating Porsche’s cautious approach to electrifying its iconic models. Therefore, enthusiasts can expect an electric 911 to remain a distant prospect, with the brand prioritizing a methodical approach to its evolution.
