Aero components have become increasingly prominent in MotoGP since Ducati first introduced winglets on its bike in the mid-2010s, prompting other manufacturers to follow suit after witnessing the performance enhancement it brought to the Desmosedici.

While the debate over the impact of extensive aerodynamics on the racing spectacle remains contentious, 2024 marked a significant escalation as bike manufacturers intensified their focus on radical wings and fairings. Aprilia and KTM emerged as pioneers in this pursuit of innovation.

Jack Miller, a rider for KTM, views aerodynamics as a cost-effective avenue for enhancing MotoGP bikes in 2024, identifying it as the final frontier yet to be fully explored by the five manufacturers competing in the premier class.

“It’s the main thing,” Miller emphasized. “We’ve devoted numerous years to refining electronics, engines, tires, and so forth. Now, we’re at the final piece of the puzzle that we can manipulate.

“I came across a statement from someone at Aprilia suggesting that developing aerodynamics is cheaper for them than refining the engine. Well, that holds true. We’re not looking to overhaul one of these MotoGP engines; it’s absurd. So, aerodynamics present an easily implementable feature that can provide assistance.

“But where does it reach its limit? Where does the progression end? I’m unsure.”

Aprilia garnered attention during pre-season testing by unveiling a substantially revamped version of the RS-GP, featuring a prominent rear wing and a novel carbon panel on the swingarm.

Aleix Espargaro, Aprilia’s factory rider, acknowledges the escalating reliance on aerodynamics as an inevitable aspect of the sport while lauding the benefits of the marque’s 2024 concept.

“We’ve observed significant shifts in our sport’s dynamics,” Espargaro noted. “But you can’t halt the tides. It’s an integral part of the game.

“I’ve stated on numerous occasions that it’s not about personal preference. This is outlined in the rulebook, and one must strive to excel within those parameters. Our bike boasts commendable aerodynamic characteristics, so hopefully, this added downforce will prove advantageous at Portimao.

“Everyone has embraced aerodynamics extensively. Our aerodynamics are particularly robust, thanks to a proficient engineering team, resulting in substantial mid-corner load without compromising straight-line speed.”
