India is gearing up to enforce a new regulation starting April 1, 2025, requiring every new car to be equipped with a rear seat belt alarm. This decision, announced by the road transport ministry, is aimed at enhancing passenger safety.
The move follows renewed attention to the importance of seat belt usage, particularly in the rear seats, sparked by the tragic incident involving Cyrus Mistry, the former Tata Sons chairman. Mistry’s fatal car accident, where he was found without a rear seat belt, underscored the critical need for such safety measures.
An official clarified that the focus of the latest draft notification is solely on rear seat belt alarms. This initiative reflects the government’s commitment to improving road safety, following previous efforts to introduce additional safety features such as six airbags and 3-point seat belts, which unfortunately did not progress and led to the lapse of the entire notification.
While seat belt reminders for the driver and front-seat passenger are already mandated by current regulations, enforcement of seat belt laws for rear-seat passengers has been lacking.
Although a fine of Rs 1,000 can be imposed under the Motor Vehicle Act for non-compliance, awareness, and enforcement challenges have hindered effective implementation.
This initiative by the road transport ministry marks a significant stride toward bolstering passenger safety standards. It underscores the importance of all occupants wearing seat belts, a fundamental safety measure proven to mitigate injuries and save lives in accidents.
