Rolls-Royce, renowned for its opulent automobiles, takes an unexpected trip down memory lane as it restores a pair of soapbox racers crafted in the early 2000s.
These racers, known as RR-0.01 and RR-0.02, marked the brand’s first foray into vehicle production at its Goodwood headquarters in England. While they may seem like an unusual project for a luxury carmaker, they symbolize a pivotal moment in Rolls-Royce’s history.
Constructed before the formal inauguration of the Goodwood facility in 2003, RR-0.01 debuted in 2001, followed by RR-0.02 in the subsequent year.
These unique creations served as Rolls-Royce’s entry into the Soapbox Challenge at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, providing a glimpse into the brand’s evolving identity. Amidst ownership transitions and the development of a new lineup, these racers represented a bold step forward for Rolls-Royce.
Crafted by the skilled hands that would later produce iconic models like the Phantom, the soapbox racers boasted Rolls-Royce-inspired design elements, including distinctive vertical-slatted grilles.
Far from ordinary, they were meticulously crafted using advanced materials like carbon fiber, fiberglass, and aluminum to ensure optimal performance and aesthetics.
Each racer boasted its unique touches, such as a hare-shaped hood ornament for RR-0.01 and a “?” logo adorning the grille of RR-0.02. Despite their unconventional nature, these racers showcased impressive capabilities, with RR-0.02 achieving a remarkable speed of 72 mph during a competition in 2013, propelled solely by gravity.
Following years of storage, Rolls-Royce enlisted a team of apprentices to undertake a comprehensive restoration, addressing damages incurred during racing and meticulously refurbishing each component.
Now, freshly rejuvenated, both RR-0.01 and RR-0.02 will find a new home at the Rolls-Royce Enthusiasts’ Club’s headquarters in Northamptonshire, England, where they will serve as cherished reminders of Rolls-Royce’s innovative spirit and enduring legacy.
