The deadline for the electronic vote is set to conclude at 1600 CET on Saturday, determining the fate of an FIA regulation that could bar certain drivers from racing in Berlin.
This peculiar circumstance arises due to a scheduling clash between the WEC’s Six Hours of Spa event on May 11 and the opening Berlin Formula E race. Several drivers are caught in the crossfire, juggling dual commitments this season.
A second Berlin race is scheduled for the following day, theoretically allowing drivers from Belgium to make it to Germany for the Formula E sequel.
However, an FIA regulation treats the German meeting as a standalone event, prohibiting teams from switching drivers between the two races without unanimous agreement from all 11 teams.
Seven drivers, including names like Sebastien Buemi, Robin Frijns, Jean-Eric Vergne, Stoffel Vandoorne, Nyck de Vries, Edoardo Mortara, and Nico Muller, are faced with Formula E and WEC commitments this season. While some prioritize Formula E, others are inclined towards WEC.
Ahead of the vote, Sylvain Filippi, Envision team principal, expressed concerns about the clash, emphasizing its disadvantages and potential impact on driver participation and championship dynamics. The outcome of the e-vote remains pending, with no official announcement date confirmed yet.
