GWM expresses support for stringent emissions standards proposed in Australia, indicating readiness to adapt by potentially introducing plug-in hybrids.

The company voices openness to the Australian Government’s proposed New Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES), emphasizing its commitment to offering fuel-efficient options to Australian consumers.

Steve Maciver, GWM Australia’s head of marketing and communications, asserts, “We welcome any standards which allow more fuel-efficient choices to be available to Australian customers.”

However, he acknowledges the importance of understanding the specifics of the legislation. Maciver emphasizes GWM’s confidence in its current vehicle lineup, stating, “We do believe that GWM is well-placed with the range of vehicles that we’ve got today.”

While awaiting the final details of the legislation, GWM remains prepared to explore alternative technologies such as plug-in hybrids. Maciver notes, “If that means we have to look at other alternatives and other technologies such as plug-in hybrid, that’s something we can look at.”

The NVES aims to set targets for average CO2 emissions per kilometer across vehicle fleets, encouraging the adoption of lower or zero-emission vehicles. GWM anticipates the potential introduction of plug-in hybrids to meet these targets.

GWM already offers hybrid versions of several SUV models and plans to introduce more hybrid and electric vehicles to the Australian market. Despite offering plug-in hybrids in other markets, none are currently available in Australia. However, GWM remains open to the possibility of introducing them in the future.

Maciver highlights GWM’s commitment to introducing hybrids and EVs into the Australian market, regardless of new emissions standards. He mentions the availability of plug-in hybrid models in other markets and the consideration of introducing them to Australia and New Zealand in the future.

The company introduced a new plug-in hybrid system in China named Hi4, with plans to implement it across its Tank range of SUVs. This system boasts an impressive electric range of over 100km.
