Snorkels to make top-tier return at WRC Safari Rally

Snorkels became renowned fixtures among WRC teams in previous iterations of the event, notably before its resurgence in 2021, serving as essential aids for cars traversing challenging terrains. These devices were pivotal in safeguarding engines from the infiltration of water and dust, ensuring optimal performance amidst rugged conditions.

Upon the Safari Rally’s return to the WRC scene, snorkels made a notable comeback. However, regulations initially barred Rally1 cars from employing them. Yet, this year, the FIA has revised regulations, permitting the inclusion of snorkels in top-class vehicles.

This regulatory amendment coincides with the Safari Rally’s shift back to its traditional Easter timing, aligning with Kenya’s rainy season instead of the June slot it occupied for the past three years.

Toyota, Hyundai, and M-Sport-Ford have diligently outfitted their cars with snorkel devices during testing in preparation for the rally. As Adrien Fourmaux from M-Sport observes, with the likelihood of wetter conditions, the significance of the snorkel device amplifies.

“With the rally now amidst the rainy season, the terrain previously laden with fesh-fesh [sand] may transform into muddy passages. Consequently, the challenge becomes more unpredictable and demanding,” Fourmaux shared with Motorsport.com’s Gravel Notes podcast.

He further elaborated, “We anticipate encountering numerous water splashes, now murky and reminiscent of the classic mud-splattered scenes from the past. Maneuvering through these sections demands astuteness; while speeding through mud seems tempting, hidden obstacles like rocks pose serious threats to the cars.”

Reflecting on the broader utility of snorkels, Fourmaux remarked, “Even in prior years, amidst the fesh-fesh, having snorkels would have proven beneficial. The engine, functioning as a vacuum, ingests all particles, including dust from the fesh-fesh. Thus, the snorkel serves as a crucial defense mechanism against potential engine damage.”

He concluded, “In addition to its functional advantages, incorporating snorkels adds an element of novelty to the sport, enhancing its appeal and intrigue.”
