Bentley revives a piece of automotive history with the production of the Speed Six continuation cars, reintroducing a design that made its debut over nine decades ago. Last year, Bentley revealed the prototype of the Speed Six continuation car, and now the automaker is diligently crafting the first of the 12 customer cars.
All 12 units have been presold, according to a recent press release from Bentley. The meticulous craftsmanship required for each car will span an estimated 10 months, as Bentley’s Mulliner personalization department oversees production in collaboration with external suppliers, utilizing period-correct materials and tools.
From specially commissioned tooling for crafting the Speed Six’s steel frame rails and cross members to the handcrafted ash-wood bodywork enveloped in fabric, every detail echoes the essence of the original cars. Restoration specialists supply headlights, radiators, and fuel tanks, with the latter meticulously handcrafted from steel and copper.
The heart of the Speed Six continuation cars lies in their meticulously recreated 6.5-liter inline-6 engine. Utilizing 3D models derived from original blueprints, Bentley has meticulously crafted an engine capable of producing 205 hp, slightly exceeding the original’s 200 hp.
Despite the potential for greater output using modern materials, Bentley opted for authenticity, ensuring the continuation cars stay true to their historical roots. The Speed Six holds a legendary status in Bentley’s heritage, having claimed victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1928 and 1930.
Notably, in 1930, Bentley’s chairman, Wold Barnato, raced a sedan-bodied Speed Six against a train across France, showcasing the car’s exceptional performance and endurance.
Drawing inspiration from two original cars Bentley’s GU409 and “Old Number 3,” the 1930 Le Mans winner the continuation cars incorporate period-specific improvements aimed at enhancing reliability, as proven by rigorous testing.
The prototype Speed Six underwent extensive trials, including 40 hours of engine testing, 6,213 miles of durability testing, and achieving a top speed of 112 mph. With the Speed Six continuation cars, Bentley not only honors its storied past but also reaffirms its commitment to craftsmanship and automotive excellence.
