In the waning minutes of the session, Lundgaard surged to the top spot with a flying lap of 1m38.2199s (112.413 mph) around the 3.067-mile, 17-turn circuit.
This effort disrupted a potential Team Penske front-row lockout, with Will Power, who had led much of the session, settling for second place, 0.4205s behind Lundgaard. Scott McLaughlin, also of Team Penske, was pushed to third, trailing by 0.5041s.
Despite a slight delay at the session’s outset due to heavy winds dispersing debris on the track, the two-hour session progressed relatively smoothly, albeit with varying wind intensities.
Arrow McLaren claimed positions four through six, with Alexander Rossi leading the charge, followed by Pato O’Ward and Callum Ilott. Colton Herta of Andretti Global secured seventh place, with Juncos Hollinger Racing’s newcomer Romain Grosjean in eighth.
Ed Carpenter Racing’s Rinus VeeKay wrapped up the top nine while reigning IndyCar Series champion Alex Palou of Chip Ganassi Racing completed the top ten.
Although several drivers encountered off-track incidents, including a spin by six-time series champion Scott Dixon, the only significant disruption occurred when Christian Rasmussen of Ed Carpenter Racing went off course in Turn 2, prompting a red flag.
