Similar to the previous year, a Korean electric vehicle clinched the prestigious title of World Car of the Year for 2024. However, this time around, it wasn’t the Hyundai Ioniq 6, but rather the Kia EV9 that emerged victorious.
The recent recipient of the Car of the Year 2024 accolade, as determined by a panel of European journalists, was the electric Renault Scenic. This European Car of the Year award, though significant, is not the sole domain of automotive journalists.
Another esteemed competition, the World Car of the Year, involves the judgment of approximately 100 international automotive journalists.
Once again, the winners were announced at the New York International Auto Show, showcasing the Kia EV9 as the champion among the contenders, continuing the trend of Korean electric vehicles leading the pack.
The Kia EV9 secured the coveted title of World Car of the Year, with the BYD Seal and the Volvo EX30 claiming the remaining spots on the podium.
Kia undoubtedly celebrated this achievement with great satisfaction, further compounded by the EV9’s additional triumph as the World Electric Vehicle of the Year. This electric SUV outpaced contenders such as the BMW i5 and the Volvo EX30. However, there were other noteworthy winners as well.
For instance, the Volvo EX30 claimed the title of World Urban Car, while the BMW i5, alongside the non-electric BMW 5-series, was honored as the ‘World Luxury Car’. The EX30 edged past competitors like the Lexus LBX and BYD Dolphin, while the BMW i5/5 series surpassed the Mercedes-Benz E-Class and EQE SUV.
Not to be overshadowed, Hyundai also earned recognition with the Ioniq 5 N winning the title of World Performance Car, surpassing rivals such as the BMW M2 and BMW XM. Finally, the accolade for World Car Design of the Year went to the new Toyota Prius, with the Japanese design scoring higher than competitors like the Ford Bronco and the Ferrari Purosangue.
