Ford is recalling 42,652 vehicles because of a problem with the fuel system. The affected vehicles are the 2022-2023 Bronco Sport and the 2022 Escape SUVs. These vehicles have a small part called a fuel injector that can crack and cause a leak. The recall only includes vehicles with 1.5-liter EcoBoost engines.
To fix the problem, Ford will install a drain tube to redirect any leaked fuel away from the engine. They will also update the software in the engine control unit to detect fuel leaks.
This recall might remind some owners of a similar issue that happened before. In November 2022, Ford recalled many Escape and Bronco Sport models for the same problem with the fuel injectors. They did the same fix then, too.
According to documents from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Ford’s team found leaks during tests on fuel injectors from two Bronco Sport vehicles. These leaks happened after Ford had already fixed the problem in previous recalls. The affected vehicles had newer fuel injectors that were supposed to be better than the old ones. However, Ford didn’t update the software or add drain tubes to these vehicles because they thought the new injectors were stronger.
However, there have been five fires in vehicles with these newer injectors and without the updates. Ford will send letters to owners in April 2024 to let them know about the recall. Owners can also contact Ford customer service for more information. All repairs will be done for free.
