General Motors (GM) is undergoing a temporary relocation of its global headquarters from the Renaissance Center in Detroit as part of the ongoing redevelopment efforts. The move comes as GM collaborates with Dan Gilbert’s real-estate firm to revitalize the RenCen. During a press conference held on Monday, GM’s CEO Mary Barra announced that the relocation is scheduled for 2025.
As reported by the Detroit News, Barra confirmed the move during the conference, which took place at 4:30 p.m. Eastern time. In the interim period, GM will establish its headquarters at the newly named Hudson’s Detroit development, situated at the former J.L. Hudson’s department store site. The collaboration between GM and Dan Gilbert’s firm aims to redevelop the iconic Renaissance Center.
Barra expressed GM’s commitment to reshaping the Renaissance Center for its next phase, stating, “Together with Bedrock, the city, and the county, we will work to reimagine the Renaissance Center for its next chapter.”
Bedrock LLC, Gilbert’s real-estate firm, recently marked a milestone with the completion of the construction of the development’s 685.4-foot-tall tower, which began in 2017.
The Hudson’s Detroit project comprises two buildings and is expected to offer 1.5 million square feet of mixed-use space, including offices, retail outlets, dining venues, residential units, a hotel, and event spaces, according to the Detroit News. Gilbert emphasized the significance of GM’s presence in the city during the press conference, stating, “GM represents more than just a new office anchor.
It solidifies the company’s commitment to the city they have called home for more than 100 years.” Sources familiar with the matter indicated that GM and Bedrock will spend the next year devising a plan for the renovation of the 50-year-old, 5.5 million-square-foot Renaissance Center. Additionally, there are no current plans to sell the expansive RenCen complex, according to information from the Associated Press.
