NIGCOMSAT Seeks Partnership With LAMATA To Boost Internet Connectivity On LRMT Train System

NIGCOMSAT, the Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited, is aiming to collaborate with the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) to enhance internet connectivity on the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) train system. This partnership intends to utilize NIGCOMSAT’s satellite technology to provide in-flight services, including internet connectivity and wireless entertainment, for passengers on the LRMT trains.

Mrs. Jane Nkechi Egerton-Idehen, the Managing Director of NIGCOMSAT, along with the organization’s Lagos regional business office, visited LAMATA on April 15th to explore potential partnership opportunities. The objective of the visit was to discuss how NIGCOMSAT’s satellite technology could be leveraged to improve internet connectivity on the LRMT train system, offering services such as in-flight internet connectivity, onboard e-commerce, and wireless entertainment.

The collaboration between NIGCOMSAT and LAMATA represents a significant opportunity to enhance connectivity for commuters in Lagos. By utilizing satellite technology, the aim is to overcome challenges related to internet connectivity on the LRMT trains, ultimately improving the overall passenger experience. This initiative underscores a potential step forward in utilizing innovative solutions to address the connectivity needs of Lagos commuters.

The LRMT system, comprising the Blue Line and Red Line, plays a crucial role in Lagos’s transportation infrastructure. The Blue Line, covering a distance of 27 kilometers from Marina to Mile 2, represents the initial phase of the LRMT system.

LAMATA has recently announced the completion and commencement of test runs for an Independent Power Plant for the Blue Line, aimed at enhancing the efficiency and reliability of the rail system. The Independent Power Plant, equipped with Diesel Rotary Uninterruptible Power Supply devices (DRUPS), ensures a constant supply of electricity to the train system and stations along the corridor, further improving the commuter experience.

The potential partnership between NIGCOMSAT and LAMATA holds promise for addressing internet connectivity challenges and enhancing passenger experience on the LRMT train system in Lagos. By leveraging satellite technology, the aim is to provide reliable in-flight services such as internet connectivity and wireless entertainment, contributing to the efficiency and convenience of public transportation for commuters in the city.
