Hyundai, Kia, And Genesis Issue Recall For Most EVs In Australia Due To Software Concerns

Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis are recalling nearly 8,000 electric vehicles in Australia due to software issues that have led to power loss. The recall encompasses various battery-powered models from these brands, affecting a significant portion of their EV lineup.

Specifically, the recall affects 3948 Kia EV6s, 3521 Hyundai Ioniq 5s and Ioniq 6s, and 528 Genesis GV60, Electrified GV70, and Electrified G80s, essentially including all sold EVs of these models in Australia. This recall follows a similar action in South Korea, where almost 170,000 Hyundai Motor Group EVs were recalled for the same issue last month.

The fault lies with the Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU), which could result in the 12-volt battery failing to charge properly, potentially leading to power loss and increasing the risk of accidents if the warning signs are overlooked. Affected owners are urged to contact their preferred dealer for necessary rectifications, including ICCU software upgrades and inspections.

All repairs will be performed at no cost to the owners. While some EVs are capable of receiving over-the-air (OTA) updates, these updates are typically limited to infotainment system software rather than core vehicle functions. Notably, the Kia EV9, although sharing a platform with the EV6 and Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6, is not subject to this recall.
