The Lagos State Government (LASG) is in discussions with the Ogun State Government to extend the Second Phase of the Lagos Blue Line rail project. Engr. Olasukanmi Okusaga, the Director of Rail Transport for Lagos Metropolitan Area Transportation Authority (LAMATA), disclosed this during an inspection of the ongoing construction of Phase 2. The extension aims to connect the Blue Line further to the Agbara area of Ogun State, expanding the reach of the rail network.
Phase 2 of the Blue Line project is currently underway, managed by the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC). Initiated in 2023, the project is anticipated to be completed within three years. Encompassing a 14-kilometer stretch, it will feature six stations at Festac, Alakija, Trade Fair, Volkswagen, LASU, and Okokomaiko. Additionally, plans are underway to construct a depot in Okokomaiko to support the operational needs of the rail system.
Engr. Okusaga expressed satisfaction with the progress made thus far during the inspection. Alongside the extension discussions, he highlighted the intention to establish a depot in Okokomaiko, further enhancing the infrastructure supporting the Blue Line Phase 2 project. This reflects a commitment to improving transportation infrastructure and connectivity in Lagos and its neighboring areas.
The first phase of the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Blue Line, which runs from Marina to Mile 2, was inaugurated for commercial operations in September of the preceding year by Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu. This initial phase covers a 13-kilometer distance and includes stations at Mile 2, Suru-Alaba, Orile Iganmu, National Theatre, and Marina, with a travel time of approximately 28 minutes, including brief stops at each station.
The extension discussions and progress on the Blue Line Phase 2 project signify ongoing efforts by the Lagos State Government to expand and improve public transportation infrastructure. By extending the rail network to areas like Agbara in Ogun State and enhancing operational facilities like depots, the aim is to provide efficient, reliable, and accessible transportation options for residents and commuters across the region.
