1969 marked a significant year for the Ford Mustang. After a notable 32% drop in sales in 1968, Ford took action in 1969 by introducing new performance-oriented options. Alongside the Boss 302 and 429 homologation specials, they revealed the Mach 1.
The Mach 1 hit showrooms boasting various engine choices, including the relatively new 428-cubic-inch Cobra Jet. With its unique appearance package featuring a matte-black hood, a “shaker” scoop, and front and rear spoilers, the Mach 1 captured attention.
Inside, it sported a Deluxe interior with simulated wood grain and specialized seats. Although Mustang sales continued to decline for the third consecutive year, the Mach 1 proved popular, accounting for 24% of all Mustang sales in 1969, prompting Ford to discontinue the GT.
Over 50 years later, the Mach 1 remains one of the most iconic versions of the first-generation Mustang. While over 70,000 examples were produced, the Cobra Jet engine version, in particular, is sought after, with only 13,261 units made. This Royal Maroon model is one of those rare finds.
This 1969 Mach 1, an authentic R-Code car with an automatic gearbox, is one of 4,053 Sportsroof units fitted with this specific drivetrain combination. With its matching interior, likely making it one of fewer than 200 built like this, its rarity is evident. Furthermore, it’s a survivor with no rust and mostly original paint, showcasing its authenticity and history.
Under the hood lies a numbers-matching 428-cubic-inch Cobra Jet engine, delivering 335 horsepower and 440 pound-feet of torque. Despite being over 50 years old since leaving the factory, this Cobra Jet still runs smoothly and sounds healthy, preserving its legacy as a true classic.
