One of the most peculiarly named vehicles in automotive history is set to hit dealerships nationwide this quarter. The 2024 Mercedes-AMG C 63 S E PERFORMANCE comes with a price tag of $83,900 before destination charges, which adds $1,150 to the final cost.
Setting aside its name, which might require explanation for those not deeply entrenched in automotive culture, let’s explore what this vehicle offers. Under the hood lies a four-cylinder engine with a Formula 1-inspired electric exhaust gas turbo. Although it’s a departure from the twin-turbo six-cylinder of the BMW M3, this engine channels its power through four exhaust outlets.
Despite the unconventional choice of a four-cylinder engine, the M139l is a true AMG powerplant. Similarly, the S58 of the M3 stands as a true M engine. The M139l generates a respectable 469 horsepower and 402 pound-feet (545 Nm) on its own, slightly less than the M3’s 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline-six, which produces 473 horsepower and 406 pound-feet (550 Nm).
In total, the C 63 boasts an advertised output of 671 horsepower and an impressive 752 pound-feet (1,020 Nm) of torque, promising a 0-60 mph time of 3.3 seconds and a top speed of 155 mph. For those craving more speed, an optional package raises the limiter to 180 mph.
Despite its higher price compared to the combustion-only M3, the C 63 S E PERFORMANCE offers a zero-emission driving range of 8 miles (13 kilometers) in the WLTP cycle. While there’s no EPA rating yet, the C 63 achieves 34 mpg in the WLTP, although it’s heavier than the C 43 due to its plug-in hybrid system.
