Electric car owners in the US have something to celebrate! There are more places than ever to charge your car on the go. A new report by Bloomberg says the number of public fast-charging stations jumped by 7.6% in just the first few months of 2024. That means there’s now one fast charger for every 15 gas stations in the US – that’s a big improvement!
This growth is partly thanks to the US government’s National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program, which is investing billions of dollars in building more charging stations. In fact, the very first NEVI charging station was installed in Ohio back in December 2023.
And it’s not just the coasts that are getting in on the action. States in the middle of the country, sometimes called “flyover country,” are adding more charging stations, too. Places like Indiana, Missouri, Tennessee, and Alabama have all seen a recent increase in fast-charging options. This is partly because convenience stores like Buc-ee’s and Wawa are starting to offer charging stations as well.
It’s important to remember that the goal is to have charging stations every 50 miles along major highways. While there’s been a lot of progress, there’s still more work to be done to reach that goal. The good news is that there are a lot of groups working on this, including the government, private companies, and organizations like the Great Plains Institute.
So, if you’re thinking about buying an electric car, but worried about finding places to charge, this is a great time to take the plunge! There are more options than ever before, and that number is only going to keep growing.
