The Federal Government (FG) has unveiled plans to commence the deployment of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles, including buses and tricycles, as part of its initiative ahead of the first anniversary of the Tinubu administration on May 29th, 2024. This move, aimed at enhancing mass transit, is highlighted by the allocation of N100 billion toward the purchase of 5,500 CNG vehicles, 100 electric buses, and over 20,000 CNG conversion kits.
The deployment of CNG vehicles forms a crucial aspect of the FG’s broader vision to significantly increase the number of natural gas-propelled vehicles on Nigerian roads, with a target of reaching at least one million such vehicles by 2027. This strategic initiative aligns with efforts to transition away from the more expensive diesel and petrol (PMS) vehicles, thereby promoting a more sustainable and cost-effective transportation ecosystem.
The announcement was made by Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, in a statement issued on Sunday, April 21st, 2024. The FG emphasizes the importance of this initiative in fulfilling President Tinubu’s vision and electoral promises, indicating substantial progress in planning and preparation, overseen by a committee led by oil and gas expert Michael Oluwagbemi.
Furthermore, the allocated funding, part of a larger N500 billion palliative budget, supports not only the acquisition of CNG and electric vehicles but also the expansion of infrastructure essential for their operation. This includes the establishment of CNG refilling stations and electric vehicle charging stations, crucial for facilitating the widespread adoption of these alternative fuel technologies across the country.
The impending deployment of CNG vehicles underscores the FG’s commitment to sustainable development and environmental stewardship, as natural gas is recognized for its lower emissions compared to traditional fossil fuels.
As Nigeria moves forward with its ambitious transportation agenda, the phased introduction of CNG buses and tricycles signifies a significant step towards achieving a more efficient, cleaner, and economically viable transport system for the nation.
