Several traditional passenger cars have succumbed to the dominance of SUVs in recent years, and another model is preparing to bid farewell from the assembly line: the Subaru Legacy. The Japanese automaker will cease production of its family sedan after the 2025 model year.
Subaru officially announced this decision, citing market trends shifting towards SUVs and crossovers, along with the brand’s transition towards electrified and fully electric vehicles. Consequently, America will bid adieu to the Subaru Legacy after a 36-year run.
Introduced in 1989, the model has been manufactured at Subaru’s Indiana factory for the U.S. market, amassing over 1.3 million sales, making it Subaru’s longest-running model. It’s estimated that over 94% of Legacy units sold in the past decade are still traversing American roads.
According to data from GoodCarBadCar, Subaru parted ways with only 4,398 Legacy units in the first quarter of this year. In 2023, sales amounted to 25,509 units, slightly surpassing the 22,605 units sold in 2022.
Subaru sold 22,766 units in 2021, 27,240 in 2020, and 35,063 in 2019. In the same quarter, the smaller WRX sold 4,404 units, with 24,681 units sold the previous year and 18,662 units in 2022. Additionally, Subaru sold 766 units of the BRZ in the first quarter of 2024, 4,188 in 2023, and 3,345 in 2022.
The 2025 Legacy will arrive at dealerships this spring with the same starting price in the Base configuration, beginning at $24,895. However, pricing for upper trims has yet to be disclosed. The 2024 Premium, Limited, and Sport versions start at $27,195, $31,945, and $34,495, respectively, excluding destination charges and dealer fees. The top-tier Legacy Touring XT has an MSRP of $38,195 for the 2024 model year.
A Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) is the sole transmission option across the range, coupled with Subaru’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive System, Traction Control, Vehicle Dynamics Control, Active Torque Vectoring, independent suspension on both axles, and ventilated disc brakes on all four corners.
