Lamborghini’s latest innovation, the Urus SE, marks a significant milestone in the automaker’s history as it reveals its first plug-in hybrid version of the Lamborghini Super SUV. This groundbreaking vehicle combines a new design, cutting-edge technology, and a powerful hybrid powertrain to redefine the standards of comfort, performance, and efficiency in its category.
The Urus SE was revealed at the Volkswagen Group Media Night preceding its public debut at Auto China Beijing 2024 on April 25th at 11 AM local time.
With its distinctive design, optimized aerodynamics, and an 800 CV hybrid powertrain, this Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) version surpasses its predecessor, the Urus S, in various aspects including comfort, performance, efficiency, emissions, and driving pleasure. Notably, the introduction of a hybrid powertrain results in an 80% reduction in emissions, aligning with Lamborghini’s commitment to sustainability and decarbonization.
Stephan Winkelmann, Lamborghini Chairman & CEO, emphasized the significance of the Urus SE, stating, “With the Urus, we changed the paradigms of the SUV world, ushering in a new segment. In just a few years, the Urus has become our brand’s bestseller, enabling Lamborghini to attract new customers and strengthen its position in the most important markets. With the Urus SE, we’ve taken another step towards the future.”
The Urus SE delivers an unmatched driving experience, thanks in part to its plug-in hybrid system, which enhances performance and dynamics across various surfaces and conditions. Technical innovations such as the electric torque vectoring system between the axles and the electronic rear differential ensure increased torque and power at any rpm, offering unparalleled driving dynamics.
The re-engineered twin-turbo 4.0 V8 engine synergizes seamlessly with the electric powertrain, generating 620 CV of power and 800 Nm of driving torque. The electric powertrain adds an extra 192 CV and 483 Nm of torque, contributing to a total output of 800 CV. This calibration strategy between the internal combustion engine and the electric motor ensures optimal power delivery across all driving modes and surfaces.
Furthermore, the Urus SE features a 25.9-kWh lithium-ion battery located beneath the load floor, enabling it to travel over 60 km in electric mode. The permanent-magnet synchronous electric motor within the 8-speed automatic transmission acts as both a boost for the combustion engine and a traction element, making the Urus SE a versatile 4WD vehicle capable of electric-only propulsion.
With a total power output of 800 CV and a torque of 950 Nm, the Urus SE boasts best-in-class performance figures, including acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.4 seconds and a top speed of 312 km/h. Its enhanced weight-to-power ratio of 3.13 kg/CV further increases its performance capabilities, making it the most powerful and fastest production car in its segment.
In terms of design, the Urus SE redefines the aesthetic standards of SUVs, featuring updated lines aimed at optimizing aerodynamic efficiency. The front section showcases a new hood design with a floating appearance, accentuating the vehicle’s sportiness. Matrix LED technology headlights, a redesigned bumper, and a revamped front grill contribute to its distinctive look.
The rear of the Urus SE boasts a redesigned cargo compartment hatch inspired by the Gallardo, emphasizing its muscular stance. A new spoiler and rear diffuser enhance aerodynamic performance, increasing rear downforce by 35% at high speeds compared to its predecessor.
Inside the cabin, Lamborghini’s signature “feel like a pilot” design philosophy is evident, featuring a redesigned dashboard and updated technology. A larger 12.3-inch touchscreen display and digital instrument cluster provide intuitive control over the Lamborghini Infotainment System (LIS) and driving assistance features.
The Urus SE offers extensive customization options, including a range of alloy wheels and over 100 bodywork color options. Interior customization includes 47 color combinations and four types of embroidery, with additional personalization options available through the Ad Personam program.
The Urus SE introduces four new Electric Performance Strategies (EPS) alongside the existing driving modes, offering a total of eleven driving options. From the urban-focused EV Drive mode to the high-performance Performance mode, drivers can tailor their driving experience to suit their preferences and conditions.
Stefano Cossalter, Product Line Director for Lanzador and Urus, emphasizes the Urus SE’s dual nature: “The Urus SE is our Super SUV with two hearts: one thermal and linked to our roots, the other electric and futuristic.
Beating in unison they offer a new interpretation of the unmistakable Lamborghini personality, but taken to a new level.” With its groundbreaking hybrid powertrain, unparalleled performance, and sophisticated design, the Lamborghini Urus SE sets a new benchmark in the Super SUV category, reaffirming Lamborghini’s commitment to innovation and excellence.
