By now, you’re likely aware of the distinction between smart Automobile and smart GmbH. To put it simply, think of Chinese automaker Geely, which teamed up with Mercedes back in 2019. Under this partnership, Mercedes-Benz Group AG handles design, while Geely takes charge of engineering and series production. This collaborative effort extends to models like the subcompact #1 and the compact #3, with a larger series-production smart set to debut in late 2024.
Revealed at the 2024 Beijing Auto Show as the smart Concept #5, this newcomer stretches 4,700 millimeters (185 inches) from bumper to bumper, compared to 4,440 for the #3 and 4,270 for the #1. Positioned as a premium mid-size utility vehicle, the concept draws loose inspiration from the EQB SUV.
Exceeding the size of Merc’s three-row crossover, the smart Concept #5 features a four-seat layout, with the potential for a three-row option given its wheelbase. Sporting all-wheel drive and rugged off-road tires, the concept introduces a fresh design language for the smart brand.
Embracing an outdoor lifestyle, this zero-emission crossover boasts a boxy silhouette, roof rack, roof rack-mounted light bar, front and rear skid plates, and a folding rear step for roof access. While it flaunts an electric winch, it’s important to note it’s not a true off-road vehicle but rather akin to models like the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon Xtreme Recon or the Ford Bronco Outlands Sasquatch.
Inside, the cockpit is dominated by three screens powered by an AMD Ryzen V2000-series microprocessor. Offering zero-gravity seats, the concept enhances safety with new airbag solutions for the front seats. Additional features include LCD screens in the wheel arch cladding, integrated screens in the front fenders, a portable speaker in the center console, and ultra-fast charging capabilities.
However, the 2025 smart #5 won’t be available in the United States, as Geely has no plans for the U.S. market, and Mercedes-Benz’s commitment to the microcar brand seems less substantial compared to previous decades.
