Toyota debuted two new battery-electric crossovers, the bZ3C and bZ3X, at this year’s Beijing Auto Show. The bZ3C resembles a smaller Crown, while the bZ3X takes on a more conventional SUV appearance. These additions reflect Toyota’s commitment to carbon neutrality through a diversified approach.
In targeting the Chinese market, Toyota emphasizes intelligence, electrification, and diversification. The focus is on creating mainstream EVs rather than high-performance luxury models, underscoring the company’s dedication to offering value.
While specific details like pricing and specifications remain undisclosed, it’s anticipated that neither the bZ3C nor the bZ3X will reach the price levels of premium-badge competitors like the Mercedes EQA or EQB.
During the presentation, EVP and Chief Technology Officer Hiroki Nakajima highlighted Toyota’s collaboration with Chinese partners to create EVs tailored to local preferences. The bZ3C and bZ3X were previously showcased as concepts at Auto Shanghai and have now been adapted for production, with minor design adjustments for a more conventional appearance.
The bZ3C, developed in collaboration with BYD Toyota EV Technology, FAW Toyota Motor, and the Intelligent ElectroMobility R&D Center, targets younger Generation Z consumers with its distinctive styling and concept of a “reboot.”
On the other hand, the bZ3X, jointly developed with Guangzhou Automobile Group, GAC Toyota Motor, and IEM by Toyota, focuses on providing a family-friendly SUV experience, emphasizing interior spaciousness akin to a mobile “Cozy Home.”
While the bZ3C boasts a dynamic interior described as a “fun personal space,” the bZ3X features a roomy and open layout with a simple dashboard design. Both models are equipped with the latest driver-assistance systems, although it’s unlikely they’ll be available in the U.S. market anytime soon due to their tailored design for Chinese buyers.
