Formula E, the electric racing championship, is about to get even more exciting! They’ve just announced a major upgrade to their race car, called the Gen3 EVO. This update comes after the Gen3 car’s debut last season.
Here’s the deal: the Gen3 car was supposed to be super light and powerful, but it wasn’t quite as fast as expected. The teams were still figuring out how to use all that power, and the new tires might have been a bit limiting.
So, how’s Formula E fixing this? With a two-pronged approach!
They’ve got new tires from Hankook that offer 5-10% more grip and are even made from recycled materials! This should help the cars handle the extra power. This is a big one. The Gen3 car actually had a front motor, but it was only used for braking. Now, they’re finally using it for acceleration too, making the cars all-wheel drive.
While front motors in single-seater race cars aren’t entirely new, most open-wheel racing (like F1 and IndyCar) relies on rear-wheel drive only. All-wheel drive is popular in road cars because it gives better acceleration and it’s easy to add to electric cars.
But here’s the twist: Formula E won’t be using all-wheel drive all the time. Drivers will only get this extra boost during qualifying races, race starts, and when they activate “attack mode” (a temporary power increase). This keeps things interesting and lets driver skill shine through on some parts of the race.
The Gen3 EVO is a big change for Formula E. With stickier tires and a powerful all-wheel drive option, the races are sure to be even more exciting next season!
Formula E’s New Car is a Speedy Surprise!
One of the problems with the Gen3 car was that using “attack mode” wasn’t very effective. The car just didn’t seem powerful enough. But that’s all about to change!
The new Gen3 EVO car has a secret weapon: an all-wheel drive mode! This means the front motor will now help the car accelerate, giving drivers a big advantage. Especially when coming out of corners, faster acceleration can make a huge difference in the race.
And how fast is this new car? Try going from 0 to 60 mph in just 1.82 seconds! That’s 30% faster than an F1 car! This incredible speed is thanks to the all-wheel drive system, which allows the car to use all four wheels for grip instead of just two. The design of the car has also been tweaked. The front wing, which tended to get damaged easily on the Gen3 car, has been redesigned to be more durable.
Formula E expects the new car to be up to 3 seconds faster per lap! That’s a huge improvement, and it should make for even more exciting races next season. Here’s hoping they can also develop that super-fast mid-race charging system they’ve been working on! That would be a game-changer for sure.
