Erik Jones “feeling pretty good” despite suffering back injury in 70G crash

Erik Jones, driver of the No. 43 Toyota for Legacy Motor Club, faced a setback during a recent race due to a multi-car wreck late in the event. Initially released from the infield care center, Jones returned on his own due to back pain, which led to his hospitalization and diagnosis of a compression fracture. Consequently, he had to miss the upcoming race at Dover, raising uncertainty about his return.

Despite his desire to get back behind the wheel, Jones acknowledged the challenges, citing lingering soreness and limited range of motion. While expressing some improvement in his condition, he remained cautious about his readiness to race again, particularly at demanding tracks like Dover.

Corey Heim, a Truck Series regular, stepped in to substitute for Jones at Dover, with potential continuation in the subsequent race at Kansas, as Jones’s recovery progress is monitored on a week-to-week basis. The temporary replacement strategy reflects the team’s adaptability to the situation.

The wreck at Talladega, initiated by a push into the corner involving multiple drivers, including Jones, resulted in a chain-reaction crash. Although Jones initially felt relatively fine, subsequent discomfort prompted further evaluation, ultimately revealing the severity of his injury.

Reflecting on the incident, Jones credited the safety measures implemented in NASCAR, particularly praising the effectiveness of the Next Gen car in mitigating potential harm. He emphasized the importance of safety advancements in minimizing the risks associated with high-speed racing.

As Jones continues his recovery process, he remains optimistic about returning to the track. However, his comeback hinges on his healing progress and overall well-being, with a scheduled appointment to assess his condition further shaping the decision regarding his return to racing activities.
