Polestar and StoreDot, a pioneer in fast-charging battery technology, have achieved a significant milestone by successfully showcasing StoreDot’s Extreme Fast Charging (XFC) technology in a car for the first time. In this groundbreaking demonstration, a Polestar 5 prototype was charged from 10-80% in just 10 minutes. The fully driveable verification prototype exhibited a consistent charge rate, starting at 310 kW and peaking at over 370 kW towards the end of the charging process.

This achievement marks the world’s first demonstration of a 10-minute 10-80% extremely fast charge using silicon-dominant cells in a drivable vehicle, underscoring Polestar’s dedication to developing innovative technology partnerships for the ultimate driving experience. The specially commissioned 77 kWh battery pack, expandable to at least 100 kWh, has the potential to add 200 miles (320 km) of range to a mid-sized electric car in just 10 minutes.

The XFC test conducted by Polestar and StoreDot battery engineers serves as a proof-of-concept for XFC battery technology that could be integrated into future Polestar vehicles. Polestar CEO, Thomas Ingenlath, emphasizes the importance of addressing charging anxiety for EV owners, noting that with this new technology, drivers can spend less time charging during longer journeys and get back on the road faster.

StoreDot’s revolutionary XFC technology utilizes silicon-dominant cells with energy density comparable to state-of-the-art NMC cells, eliminating the need for specialized cooling systems in vehicles. The experimental XFC battery modules also contribute to improved mechanical properties and cooling ability while maintaining or reducing weight levels, with high recyclability and serviceability in mind.

During the test, Polestar observed a steady charging rate from 310 kW at 10% SOC to over 370 kW at 80% SOC, demonstrating the technology’s consistent performance across a wide state-of-charge range. Importantly, XFC technology is compatible with existing DC charging infrastructure, paving the way for faster and more convenient charging experiences for EV drivers.

Reducing charging time to 10 minutes for a 10-80% charge brings EV charging closer to the speed and convenience of refueling a petrol car. With consistent charge speeds available, drivers could stop for as little as five minutes at 50% SOC and continue their journey with over 80% SOC, significantly enhancing the practicality and ease of EV ownership.

Dr. Doron Myersdorf, CEO of StoreDot, highlights the significance of this achievement in revolutionizing EV ownership, stating that extremely fast charging technology is essential for widespread electric car adoption. This breakthrough eliminates range and charging anxiety, enabling drivers to travel long distances with the same freedom and convenience as traditional fossil fuel-powered vehicles.
