Mercedes-Benz To Cease Using Apple’s Next-Generation CarPlay

Mercedes has decided not to adopt Apple’s next-generation CarPlay, despite its promise of a seamless integration between the car and iPhone functionalities. This decision was confirmed by Mercedes CEO Ola Källenius in a recent podcast interview with The Verge.

Instead, Mercedes is set to introduce its own MBOS 1.0 operating system, debuting in the new CLA model next year. Källenius emphasized the significance of MBOS as the central nervous system of the vehicle, encompassing various functions beyond just infotainment.

According to Källenius, MBOS controls every aspect of the car, including infotainment, automated driving, body functions, and more. He stressed the importance of providing a unified experience for users, ensuring that every element feels like a part of the Mercedes brand. Källenius believes that only the manufacturer can deliver a superior customer experience by integrating all aspects of the vehicle seamlessly.

Mercedes aims to create the best digital experience for its customers, prioritizing intuitive user interfaces and a cohesive environment within the car. Källenius argues that allowing Apple to insert itself between Mercedes and its drivers would disrupt this quest for excellence. The company’s focus is on delivering a tailored experience that embodies the essence of the Mercedes brand, rather than relying on third-party solutions like CarPlay.

Despite opting out of Apple’s next-generation CarPlay, Mercedes will continue to offer the current version of CarPlay and Android Auto for customers who prefer those options.

This decision reflects Mercedes’ commitment to providing flexibility to its users while maintaining control over the overall digital experience within its vehicles. Customers will still have the choice to switch between different systems based on their preferences and comfort levels.
